street photography - the new york school

Between the late 1930s and the early 1960s a group of young photographers living and working in New York City redefined street photography. This group of artists became known as The New York School. A new exhibition at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London (until June 7 2008) brings together the work of these photographers as they documented the post-war energy of the city in their trademark black-and-white, film noir style. The New York School is also the name of the poets of that generation. My favourite poet, Alice Notley, is part of the 2nd generation New York School that came up in the 60s and 70s. "Oh fellow consider/ the look of legs/ walking on film," she wrote in her great book of poetry Mysteries of Small Houses.

They need to have an exhibit here in NYC!! But, i am sure they have and I missed it. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi 5 Serenity, I got to get to London before I miss it as well. Tthere's so much going on in London over the next few months culturally, Tate Modern have all the street art, Massive Attack are hosting the Meltdown at the Southbank and this photography exhibition to name just a few. I better book some holiday soon. I hope you are doing well J.
